A linear time algorithm for the induced disjoint paths problem in planar graphs

چکیده
In this paper, we consider a problem which we call the induced disjoint paths problem (IDPP) for planar graphs. We are given a planar graph G and a collection of vertex pairs {(s1, t1), . . . , (sk, tk)}. The objective is to find k paths P1, . . . , Pk such that Pi is a path from si to ti and Pi and Pj have neither common vertices nor adjacent vertices for any distinct i, j. This problem setting is a generalization of the disjoint paths problem, since if we subdivide each edge, then desired disjoint paths would be induced disjoint paths. The problem is motivated by not only the disjoint paths problem but also the recognition of an induced subgraph. The latter has been developed in the recent years, and this is actually connected to the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem [1], and the recognition of the perfect graphs [2]. Our main result in this paper is to give a linear time algorithm for the IDPP for planar graphs. This generalizes the result by Reed, Robertson, Schrijver and Seymour [13]. This also gives a polynomial time algorithm to find an induced circuit through given k vertices in planar graphs if one exists when k is fixed. The case k = 2 was previously proved by McDiarmid, Reed, Schrijver and Shepherd [9]. ∗An extended abstract of this paper appears in Proceedings of the 13th Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization Conference (IPCO 2008). †National Institute of Informatics, 2-1-2 Hitotsubashi, Chiyoda-ku Tokyo 101-8430, Japan (E-mail: k [email protected]) ‡Department of Mathematical Informatics, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113-8656, Japan (E-mail: Yusuke [email protected], Telephone and Fax: +81-3-5841-6924)

Linear - Time Algorithms for Disjoint Two - Face PathsProblems
In this paper we present a linear-time algorithm for the vertex-disjoint Two-Face Paths Problem in planar graphs, i.e., the problem of nding k vertex-disjoint paths between pairs of terminals which lie on two face boundaries. The algorithm is based on the idea of nding rightmost paths with a certain property in planar graphs. Using this method, a linear-time algorithm for nding vertex-disjoint ...
متن کاملSimple Algorithms for Steiner Trees and Paths Packing Problems in Planar Graphs
In this paper we give a short survey on eecient algorithms for Steiner trees and paths packing problems in planar graphs. We particularly concentrate on recent results. The rst result is a linear-time algorithm for packing vertex-disjoint trees resp. paths within a planar graph, where the vertices to be connected lie on at most two diierent faces 26, 32]. This algorithm is based on a linear-tim...
متن کاملImproved Algorithms for the 2-Vertex Disjoint Paths Problem
Given distinct vertices s1, s2, t1, and t2 the 2-vertex-disjoint paths problem (2-VDPP) consists in determining two vertex-disjoint paths p1, from s1 to t1, and p2, from s2 to t2, if such paths exist. We show that by using some kind of sparsification technique the previously best known time bound of O(n + mα(m,n)) can be reduced to O(m+nα(n, n)), where α denotes the inverse of the Ackermann fun...

Given a graph G = (V, E) and two vertices s, t ∈ V , s 6= t , the Menger problem is to find a maximum number of disjoint paths connecting s and t . Depending on whether the input graph is directed or not, and what kind of disjointness criterion is demanded, this general formulation is specialized to the directed or undirected vertex, and the edge or arc disjoint Menger problem, respectively.
